The Walkerton Capitals would host the visiting Mildmay team
on Thursday, July 20th.
Walkerton would be short 3 regular players and would call up a young
Rookie player and require a player from Mildmay just to take to the field.
Mildmay would be the first to bat and Connor McIntosh would start out strong striking out the first two batters. The next batter would triple and then player after player would make contact with the ball and advance runners. Mildmay would score the maximum 6 runs before Walkerton would come to bat. The Capitals would lead off their half of the inning by sending Carson Baglole to the plate who would single and then promptly steal second. Jake Wells would then walk and Talan Hope would advance both runners with a single to load the bases. The Capitals would score its first run when Connor McIntosh would walk to bring in Carson from third. Walkerton’s next 2 batters would strike out but with bases loaded Logan Bradley would outlast the pitcher and gain a walk which would bring Jake around from third before the final Walkerton player would strike out.
The top of the second had Mildmay add to its lead by scoring an additional three runs after sending 8 players into the batters box. Walkerton’s players came out with a little more jump in their game. The top of the order had the first 2 players striking out but the team then settled in for some timely hitting. Jake Wells would reach first with a walk and then steal second before Talan Hope sent a line drive into the outfield reaching third with a stand up triple. Connor McIntosh would then score Talan with a single into shallow centre field. Connor would then advance to second on a wild pitch and then come home on a Matthew McNaughton single. Matthew would then steal second, A.J. Wells and Logan Bradley would both walk to load the bases. The third out would be recorded with the bases loaded to end any threat of adding more runs.
The top of the third and Walkerton sent Carson Baglole to the pitcher’s plate. While effective with his pitching Mildmay was able to make the most of its hitting with some uncharacteristic fielding decisions by the Walkerton players. Mildmay would again score the six run maximum to take a commanding lead. Walkerton would come to bat in the bottom of the third. Lead off by Simon (player lent to us by Mildmay) who would single and then promptly steal second and third on wild pitches. Jake Wells and Talan Hope would both walk to load the bases. The bases would then be cleared when Connor McIntosh crushed a line drive to record a triple. Matthew McNaughton would be awarded first base after catcher interference and that would put runners on the corners. Matthew would then steal second on a passed ball. A.J. Wells would outlast the pitcher and walk to again load the bases. Connor would collide with the catcher at home plate after attempting to steal home after a ball escaped the glove before bouncing back to home plate to record a third out.
The opposing coaches would talk before the players would take to the field. Walkerton was down yet another player and it was decided to call the game. Mildmay would win in a convincing manner but would give credit to Walkerton players for continuing to fight back throughout.
